About Sex Addiction
Just as alcohol and drugs can be used to medicate or cope with painful feelings and stressful situations, so can sexual behavior. The sex addict typically combines sexual behaviors and sexual fantasy to gain a physical and emotional release. Sexual addiction behaviors include masturbation, pornography, internet activity, anonymous encounters and affairs. It can affect both men and women. The difference between a healthy sex drive and a sexual addiction is that the sexual addict is trying to "fix" something. Persons with a healthy sex drive feel satisfied with sex, sex addicts don't. The addict continuously needs the next sexual behavior, and a "No" from their partner can be met with anger and taken very personally.
Living with a sexually addicted person can be very lonely. Feelings of separation, hopelessness, not being enough, and that sexual relations within the couple never seem to be enough are commonly described. Anger for many unmet needs is also common. It is also possible for sex addicts not to have normal sexual relations with their partner or spouse, seeking sexual gratification outside the relationship or with themselves instead.
Sexual addiction can be treated. There is a growing body of research on sexual addiction and recovery from it.
In addition to Sexual Addiction, there are other types of addictions that we provide intervention services for. To learn more about these addictions click on the link below.
